Career

Beginning (2004-2011)

Saba Qamar began her career with the PTV television series Mein Aurat Hoon in 2004. She then participated in the telefilm Ishq, directed by Dilawar Malik and starring Bilal Qureshi for Geo Entertainment. Later that year, she appeared as a model in Abrar-ul-Haq’s music video Boliyan from the award-winning album Nachan Main Audhay Naal.

In 2005, Saba co-starred with Sami Khan in ATV’s Chaap. She later succeeded Sophia Mirza as Tania in the comic drama Sussar In Law, and she appeared as Sonia in Episodes 40-41 of Hera Pheri & Company and Erum in Episode Faisla of the Punjabi anthology series Jag Beeti on PTV.

In 2006, she appeared in several famous PTV series, including Kahin Tum Kahin Hum, Phool, Apno Ka Sath, and Dhoop Mein Andhera Hai. She then appeared in supporting parts on PTV’s Gharoor and Taqdeer, as well as Geo Entertainment’s Banjar. She appeared alongside Ahsan Khan in both Banjar and Gharoor. Saba later played Sana Hamdani in her lone starring role, opposite Fawad Khan, in the PTV series telefilm Kal.

In 2007, Saba starred in two prominent ATV serials: Khuda Gawah, an adaptation of the 1992 Indian film of the same name, and Muhabbat Ab Nahi Hogi. Later the same year, Qamar participated in several comedy dramas, including Aaj TV’s Mirch Masala, starring Veena Malik and Shamil Khan, and PTV’s Unbiyaanable, Maamo, and No.1.

In 2008, Saba appeared in ATV’s melodrama Woh Subha Kab Aayegi, comedy series Not Responding, and Nawab Manzil. She then played four supporting roles on PTV, including Chubhan, Na Janay Kyun, Phool Aur Kantey, and Bint-e-Adam. In the social drama Bint-e-Adam, she played a rich brat who falls in love with a poor kid (Ahsan Khan) and marries him against her cruel father’s wishes. Bint e Adam was a big critical and commercial hit; nonetheless, critics noticed that her role was “limited” in terms of performance.

In 2009, She participated biographical drama Jinnah Ke Naam, directed by Tariq Mairaj and produced by PTV Home. She played Ruqsana Inayatullah, and the series was a tribute to Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. In an earlier interview with The Communicate Tribune, Saba admitted, “For me, acting is being able to express the feelings, emotions, and expressions of different people and characters”.

In the same year, Saba appeared in two Geo Entertainment serials: Teri Ik Nazar and Nadia Naam Ki Larki. She later appeared in PTV Home serials Hum Tu Karain Kamal, Mishaal, and Tinkay. She won the PTV Awards for best TV actress in both the public and jury choice categories at the 16th Annual PTV Awards on July 23, 2011, for her work in Tinkay.

In 2010, she played Surraya in Hum TV’s pre-partition television series Dastaan, which was adapted from Razia Butt’s novel Bano. She appeared opposite Ahsan Khan, Sanam Baloch, and Fawad Khan. The series proved to be her breakthrough, as she won Best TV Actress at the Pakistan Media Awards (2010). She then portrayed the lead character of Pooja Mohan Das in Indus Vision’s partition-themed drama Kanpur Se Katas Tak. Saba later participated in two A-Plus dramas, Rait Kay Dairay and Aankh Salamat Andhay Log. She went on to participate in Geo Entertainment’s soap Chaand Ki Goud Mein and social drama Uraan.

She went on to portray the lead in the PTV Home serial Lahore Junction opposite Shamil Khan, as well as ATV’s Amar Bel opposite Kashif Mehmood and Ghao opposite Sami Khan. Later that year, Saba played the character of blind girl Naila Habib in the Geo Entertainment anthology series Taaluq.

In 2011, Saba then participated in Sarmad Khoosat’s love serial Pani Jaisa Piyar (2011), playing Sana, who had been engaged to Adarsh, the son of her mother’s best friend, since she was a toddler. Adarsh, on the other hand, was uninformed of the engagement because his parents believed that he should prioritize his education before wedding planning. It was followed by a role in the PTV show Tera Pyar Nahi Bhoole. She was cast opposite Ahsan Khan in both series. She later appeared in PTV Home’s serials Khalida Ki Walida, Main Aisa Kyun Hoon, Nazar, and Two in One. Later that year, she appeared in Maat, playing the self-obsessed Saman alongside Adnan Siddiqui and Aamina Sheikh.

The series was a critical and financial success, becoming the thirteenth highest-rated Pakistani television series and earning her the Pakistan Media Award for Best Actress. That same year, She teamed with Sami Khan on two pieces, Jo Chale To Jaan Se Guzar Gaye and Main Chand Si, which received additional appreciation. She later played Vaneeza in Hum TV’s Eid telefilm Balay Ki Balli. Later, she starred opposite Saleem Sheikh in the A-Plus sitcom Ghar Ki Baat Hai. Finally, in the episode Matti Ka Qarz of PTV Home’s anthology series Faseel-e-Jaan Se Aagay, she played Neelofar.

Professional expansion (2012-2015)

Saba next starred in Ameen Iqbal’s Thakan (2012), where she played Sadaf, a woman who works tirelessly to support her family, but no one, except her grandfather, sympathizes with or even cares about her. She later appeared in ARY Digital’s two Eid Telefilms, Pyaar Mein Twins and Love Ki Kichri. It was followed by starring roles in Amna Nawaz Khan’s Na Kaho Tum Mere Nahi (2012) and Faiza Iftikhar’s Yahan Pyar Nahin Hai (2012). The latter earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the Hum Awards. She appeared in another PTV Home series, Bhool. It was shot in 2008 but was delayed and eventually released in 2012.

She rose to prominence for playing a variety of characters in serials such as Shikwa Na Shikayat (2012), Shehryar Shehzadi (2012), a special appearance in ARY Digital’s Timmy G (2012), Kaash Aisa Ho (2013), Miss Fire (2013), Sannata (2013), and Ullu Baraye Farokht Nahi (2013), for which she received several best actress nominations. She earned her first Hum Award for Best TV Actress for her portrayal of Diana in Bunty I Love You at the third Hum Awards.

Saba also appeared in the television film Aina (2013), which starred Faysal Qureshi. The film, a remake of the 1977 film of the same name, garnered positive feedback from the audience, and she was nominated for Best Actress at the Tarang Housefull Awards. After two years of badly regarded serials, Saba’s career prospects improved in 2014, when she appeared in six projects: Jaanam, Bay Emaan Mohabbat, Na Katro Pankh Mere, in which she collaborated with Danish Taimoor for the first time, Bunty I Love You, Izteraab, and Digest Writer.

The romantic drama Jaanam (with Adnan Siddiqui) and the romance Bay Emaan Mohabbat (with Agha Ali and Adnan Shah Tipu) received little acclaim, but the family drama Bunty I Love You (about a girl who married a much older man at the age of 17 and later dreams of living a free life after his death) was Saba’s first critical success after Maat. The series, directed by Siraj-ul-Haque, received mostly positive reviews. According to a Daily Pakistan reviewer, it was “one of the best performances of Qamar” alongside Digest Writer.

The series got five Hum Award nominations, including Saba for Best Actress. She was next seen in Izteraab. Her portrayal as the working woman was underwhelming, and despite the superb cast, narrative, production house, and promotions, the drama was a critical and commercial failure. She later appeared on Hum TV’s anthology series Shareek-e-Hayat, helmed by Wajahat Rauf.

Saba then made her acting debut in Lollywood as a lead in the critically praised biographical film Manto (2015). The film, directed by Sarmad Khoosat, was made on a large budget and performed poorly at the box office, grossing Rs 5.05 million in total; however, it was critically acclaimed, and Qamar’s portrayal of singer Noor Jehan was well received by critics, earning her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the ARY Films Awards. The film was eventually turned into a television series with the same cast in 2017, titled Main Manto, which aired on Geo TV.

Established actress (2016–2019)

Saba received a Best Actress nomination in 2016 for her part as a struggling actress in the historical drama Mein Sitara (a serial based on the golden era of Bollywood) alongside Mekaal Zulfiqar, and she also played Mishal in Farooq Rind’s Besharam opposite Zahid Ahmed. The latter was a commercial and critical success. Sadaf Haider of The Express Tribune lauded her, writing, “Qamar is in great form as Mishi and plays her with restraint and quiet power; a welcome change from the wounded women she has played of late.” Saba portrayed a rockstar opposite Yasir Hussain in the travel comedy Lahore Se Aagey (2016).

The film, a sequel to the comedy Karachi Se Lahore, is one of the highest-grossing Pakistani films of all time, with a global gross of Rs 21.60 million and a Nigar Award for Best Film Actress. Later that same year, she starred in the critically and commercially unsuccessful psychological thriller 8969.

Saba was offered an Indian feature opposite Randeep Hooda, as well as supporting roles in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2012) and Heroine (2012), but she declined. After the 2016 Uri incident, relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated; the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) and the Film Producers Guild of India barred Pakistani artists from working in India until the issue was resolved. Saba’s debut in Hindi cinema came with the comedy-drama Hindi Medium (2017), in which she played the lead female part of Meeta Batra, a nouveau riche alongside Irfan Khan.

The film had a positive review from critics. According to a reviewer for The Times of India, “Saba, as the dominating wife, is sheer delight onscreen”. In a scathing review, Sreehari Nair of Rediff.com dubbed the film “fascinatingly frustrating” and Saba a “natural actress, sexual daring“. The film grossed about ₹334.36 million globally, with the majority coming from the Chinese box office. Saba garnered multiple Best Actress nominations at various award events, including one from Filmfare. Later that year, Eastern Eye named Saba, the top Bollywood debutante of 2017.

In 2017, Saba appeared in the biographical drama series Baaghi as Pakistan’s controversial figure Qandeel Baloch. The series was a critical and economic success, ranking among the highest-grossing Pakistani dramas of 2017. Saba’s performance was enthusiastically hailed by critics, and her interpretation of the actress and singer received acclaim even before its debut. Neeha of The Nation stated, “Without a doubt, Saba has done an outstanding job,” and a critic from The Express Tribune claimed she “slayed the social media star with such finesse.” The series garnered her a Lux Style Award for Best Actress (Television) and an IPPA Award for Best Actress.

In 2018, Saba starred in three short films. She first appeared alongside Ahsan Khan in the Siraj-ul-Haque-directed film Moomal Rano. The film was created as part of the Zeal For Unity program to break down cultural barriers between India and Pakistan. It received critical acclaim and was nominated for Best Film at the 2018 European Festival. It was released on the internet platform Zee5. She then starred in Fahim Burney’s Dil Diyan Gallan, opposite Zahid Ahmed, as Raniya.

She was subsequently paired with Farhan Saeed for the first time in the television series Iss Dil Ki Essi Ki Tessi. Saba later appeared as a model in Shuja Haider’s music videos Jeewan Daan and Funn Mitti Se. In 2019, Saba appeared in the criminal thriller Cheekh, where she played a feisty girl fighting for justice. It is considered a critical and commercial success.

Further success (2020-present)

In 2020, she narrated Zara Abid’s debut short film, Sikka, which was released on the Qissa Nagri YouTube channel. She later teamed with Bilal Saeed on the song video Qubool, which she also directed. Saba played Naheed Ahmed Tasnim in the 2021 television series Hangor S-131, which aired on ARY Digital. In the same year, Qamar modeled for Abrar-ul-Haq’s Begum Shak Karti Hai and Mustafa Zahid’s Chingaariyan music videos. Saba returned to film in 2022, following a five-year hiatus, with Sarmad Khoosat’s Kamli and Saqib Khan’s Ghabrana Nahi Hai. Qamar received numerous honors for Kamli, including the IVIF and Lux Style Awards for Best Film Actress.

She later gained praise for playing Maya Nisar in ARY Digital’s blockbuster crime thriller Fraud, alongside Ahsan Khan and Mikaal Zulfiqar. In the same year, Saba made her OTT debut with the critically and commercially popular Zee5 web series Mrs and Mr Shameem and Urduflix Original Naina Ki Sharafat. She later starred as a model in Asim Azhar’s music video Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum, alongside Fahad Mustafa.

Saba won the Best Actress Award from USAID in 2023 for her portrayal of taxi driver Rania in the short series Sar-e-Rah. It was created by IDream Entertainment in conjunction with USAID. In the same year, she collaborated with the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme to raise awareness about polio, appearing in the YouTube miniseries Yehi Waqt Hai alongside Haroon Shahid, Kiran Haq, and Agha Mustafa Hassan.

She garnered considerable appreciation for her role as antagonist Gul Meher in Express Entertainment’s miniseries Gunah, directed by Adnan Sarwar and starring Juggan Kazim, Rabia Butt, and Sarmad Khoosat. Saba then partnered with Green Entertainment on three projects: the classic love drama Tumhare Husn Ke Naam, the crime thriller Serial Killer, and the social drama Pagal Khana.
