Early Life And Education

Mahira Khan was born on December 21, 1988, to a Pashtun family in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. In an online interview with Reham Khan, she revealed that her parents are Urdu-speaking Pathans. Her father, Hafeez Khan, was born in Delhi during the British Raj and fled to Pakistan following India’s division. Her younger brother, Hasan Khan, is a journalist and entrepreneur.

She attended Foundation Public School, where she completed her A’Level. After graduating from Foundation, she came to California, United States, at the age of seventeen, to pursue higher education at Santa Monica College. Khan was the first woman in her family to travel out of the nation alone. However, she later claimed that living in the United States alone helped her become “strong and independent.”Khan subsequently enrolled at the University of Southern California to pursue a Master’s degree in English literature, while also working part-time as a Rite Aid cashier.

She detailed her experience: “I used to mop and clean floors, run the till, and close the store at night.”However, after completing her first year, Khan decided to pursue her dream of becoming an actor, leaving her university degree and returning to Pakistan.

While living in the United States, her friend Ali Askari introduced her to a reality show producer who cast her in the 2006 MTV series Most Wanted. She later appeared as a presenter on the Aag TV reality show Weekends with Mahira (2008). The show was a huge success, and the audience loved it. Her presence on the show piqued the interest of filmmaker Shoaib Mansoor, who recognized her and offered her a role in his film Bol (2011), which she accepted.

Career

Early Work (2006-2011)

Khan began her career as a VJ in 2006, hosting the live show Most Wanted on MTV Pakistan, which aired three days per week. She later presented a reality show for AAG TV called Weekends with Mahira. In 2008, she hosted a show where she showed music videos, interviewed celebrities, and answered audience phone calls.

Khan made her film debut in the 2011 film Bol, directed by Shoaib Mansoor. She played Ayesha, a girl from a strict lower-middle-class family residing in the old part of Lahore who shares a love of music with her love interest Mustafa (Atif Aslam). The film was a critical and commercial triumph, becoming one of Pakistan’s highest-grossing films of all time. The same year, Khan made her TV drama debut in Mehreen Jabbar’s Neeyat. The serial was set in New York, and she played Ayla.

Breakthrough and Recognition (2012–2017)

Khan’s next appearance was in the drama serial Humsafar, directed by Sarmad Khoosat. Both the play and Khan garnered favorable reviews from critics. The drama series was also shown on Zindagi and was a hit in India. It got her the Lux Style Award for Satellite Best TV Actress and the Hum Award for Best Onscreen Couple. In 2013, she appeared in Shehr-e-Zaat, directed by Sarmad Khoosat. The drama got her Best Actress awards at the Pakistan Media Awards and Hum Awards. From 2013 to 2014, she presented TUC The Lighter Side of Life, a talk show.

Khan played Shano in the drama serial Sadqay Tumhare, directed by Mohammed Ehteshamuddin, in 2014. The drama garnered her a Lux Style Award for Best TV Actress, as well as two Hum Awards and a Hum Award nomination. She appeared in the 2015 film Bin Roye, directed by Shahzad Kashmiri, alongside Humayun Saeed.

The film got her the Lux Style Award for Best Actress (Film), the Hum Award for Best Actress, a Hum Style Award for Most Stylish Actress (Film), and the Masala! Award for Best Actress. The film was also made into a TV series in 2016, earning her a Hum Award for Best Actor Female (Drama Serial) and a nomination for Best Onscreen Couple. She played a minor role in the Sarmad Khoosat-directed biographical film Manto in 2015.

In 2016, she appeared in the Asim Raza-directed film Ho Mann Jahaan, which got her a Lux Style Award for Best Actress (Film) and a Nigar Award nomination for Best Actress.

Khan made her Hindi cinema debut in early 2017, co-starring in Rahul Dholakia’s Raees. Before the film’s release, the ‘Indian Motion Picture Producers Association’ (IMPPA) and ‘The Film Producers Guild of India’ decided to prohibit all Pakistani actors, actresses, and technicians from working in India due to the tensions created by the 2016 Uri attack until the situation was normalized. There were rumors that Khan’s scenes would be cut from the film or substituted by another actress.

Shah Rukh Khan, the film’s primary star and co-producer, stated that she would not be permitted to promote it in India. Khan got repeated threats from the Shiv Sena, an Indian far-right political group. Despite controversies, the film was released in January 2017 and was a modest commercial success, earning over ₹3.0 billion (US$39 million) worldwide. This made Khan the first Pakistani actress to join Bollywood’s 100 Crore Club. She also became the top-grossing actress in Bollywood during the first quarter of 2017.

Success and recent work (2018–present)

Khan began her singing career in 2017 with her role as a rape victim in Shoaib Mansoor’s social drama film Verna. The film garnered mostly negative reviews, however, her performance was lauded, and she won the Lux Style Award for Best Actress in 2018. In 2018, she starred in Meenu Gaur and Farjad Nabi’s romantic comedy, 7 Din Mohabbat, which was a commercial flop. In 2019, she had a guest appearance in Asim Raza’s Parey Hut Love. The same year, she appeared in the romantic musical drama Superstar, which was her highest-grossing domestic picture at the time.

In 2022, she played with Fahad Mustafa in Nabeel Qureshi’s action-comedy film Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad, which received mixed reviews. She also created a web series called Baarwan Khiladi, which was released in March 2022. Khan then appeared in Bilal Lashari’s Punjabi-language action drama film The Legend of Maula Jatt, alongside Fawad Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, and Humaima Malik. The film was released in October 2022 and received widespread accolades from critics.

However, Khan’s performance was not well received. Syed Zain Raza of The Friday Times commented, “One can’t deny Mahira’s star power, but it would be better to say that this wasn’t her film.”Mukkho wasn’t designed for her,” while Dawn Images’ Siham Basir commented, “The only downside for me was Mahira Khan’s Mukkho. Her Punjabi accent required a lot of polish because her performance fell flat.”
